The Belarusian president emphasizes that the peace talks that Russia and Ukraine held in Istanbul in 2022 could be the basis for a new attempt, something the Kremlin also recently suggested.

In March 2022, Ukrainian and Russian negotiators presented a draft peace settlement. It stated, among other things, that Ukraine would become a neutral state with limited armed forces and that Russia and Western powers would provide the country with security guarantees. Ultimately, nothing came of the arrangement.

“All military personnel, Western leaders, politicians and heads of state publicly announce that Putin must not win the war. If they really insist on this, this is the right time for negotiations,” Lukashenko said. The president, a close ally of Putin, says he fears that Russia will use nuclear weapons if the conflict escalates further. “And that would cause an apocalypse,” it sounds.

Finally, Lukashenko claims that there is a stalemate at the front and neither the Russian nor the Ukrainian army is making much progress at the moment.
