The incident took place at Aman Valley School (in Welsh ‘Ysgol Dyffryn Aman’) in the village of Ammanford, south-west Wales. The school is currently in lockdown. “Three people were injured. They are currently being cared for,” the police said. The victims were taken to hospital by helicopter. Their condition is unknown.

“Emergency services remain on site and the school will remain closed for the duration of the investigation,” it said. The school has 1,800 students from 11 to 18 years old.

Two staff members, including a teacher, are said to be among the three injured. “It’s terrible, we hope she’s okay, she’s a very friendly woman,” said a parent of one of the students. “You send your children to school and expect them to be safe there and then you hear that someone has been stabbed. It is all very worrying,” says another parent.

The police have arrested one suspect. According to school officials, two girls were involved in the incident. The two reportedly got into a heated argument, prompting two staff members to intervene.

Welsh Prime Minister Vaughan Gething is “shocked” by the “terrible news”. “I thank all first responders and think of our community as we try to find out more information,” he writes in a message on X. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also says on X that his support goes out “to everyone involved.”
