On Saturday, May 4, four judokas from Judo School Ukemi traveled to Belgium. The 8th Open Cup of Ghent was held in Ghent. a tournament that is highly regarded among the Belgian selection.
In the afternoon block, the judokas up to 15 years old stood on the tatami. Aurora Dekker won gold in the girls under 44 kg. Aurora won her matches with a strong hip throw and became champion in Ghent! Finn Kortekaas, boys up to 46 kg, became number one in his group and was allowed to enter the semi-finals. Here he lost to the eventual champion, and finished 5th….

The under-18 judokas, Katara Dekker and Nicky Favié, were allowed to compete in the morning and both achieved victories in their class. Katara (-57 kg) won two matches with a shoulder throw, Nicky (-63 kg) won with a leg throw. Unfortunately, both ladies lost afterwards, after which they were not allowed to retake the match. Both Katara and Nicky finished 5th.

A great experience for all four judokas. Next week they will go back to Belgium, when the ‘Ippon Trophy Antwerp’ is on the calendar for eight of our judokas.
