The fire brigade was called to a small fire under the Austrelitz Bridge on Saturday evening. However, it turned out on site that it was not just litter that had caught fire. The firefighters also made a macabre discovery: a badly mutilated body with missing limbs. The torso was in a suitcase that had caught fire.

Bags containing other remains of the victim were later found near the site. It proved impossible to identify the body. During an autopsy, which took place on Sunday afternoon at the nearby forensic institute on the Quai de la Râpée, the cause of death could be determined. According to the medical examiner, the victim had been murdered with his bare hand. It was not clear who it was, but the anatomist pathologist was able to say that the victim was someone who was paralyzed. He barely had any muscles left in his legs.

The investigators faced a difficult task. There were no witnesses and nothing was visible on camera images. The place where the body was found was not easily accessible. To get there you have to cross the four lanes of the ring road. The sidewalk is also very narrow. So it is not easy to cross the road at that location with a suitcase with a body in it.

A month ago, the victim had allegedly behaved disrespectfully towards the suspect’s wife. The latter became mad with anger and beat the man in his fifties to death with his bare hand

The other side of the bridge is known as a meeting place for homeless people who seek shelter from the wind and weather. “A body in a suitcase? Here? And that just before the Olympic Games,” one of them said somewhat sarcastically on Sunday. The homeless fear that they will all be chased away during the games. “France is more concerned with its image than with the people who live here,” he said.

Late on Sunday afternoon, the case unexpectedly gained momentum when a 34-year-old man reported himself to the police. He was no stranger to justice and was wanted for other offences. During interrogation, he admitted that he had dumped the body under the bridge.

During his interrogation, he also stated that he was the caregiver of the victim, a 56-year-old man with multiple sclerosis (MS). According to the victim’s family, the caregiver had always taken good care of him. But about a month ago, the victim had allegedly behaved disrespectfully towards the suspect’s wife. The latter became mad with anger and beat the man in his fifties to death with his bare hand.

He is said to have kept the body in his apartment for some time. But when it started to smell bad, he cut it up and dumped it under the Austerlitz Bridge. The suspect is being questioned again today because, despite his detailed statements, he was heavily under the influence of drink and drugs on Sunday.
