Testaankoop follows the prices of more than 3500 products in Albert Heijn, Carrefour, Colruyt, Cora, Delhaize, Aldi and Lidl and calculates inflation accordingly. Food inflation has now fallen for the 13th month in a row.

Fruit and vegetables fell the most last year and dairy products such as butter and semi-skimmed milk also became cheaper. But there were also products that rose sharply in price, including olive oil, potatoes and carrots.

Price increase of 23% in two years

Over a period of two years, the shopping cart has increased in price by an average of 23%, based on the products that Testaankoop tracks. The consumer organization questions the evolution of some prices in supermarkets. While raw material and energy prices are falling, consumer prices are not falling in proportion.

“We also continue to be surprised by the discrepancy between the decline in energy and raw material prices and the decline in prices charged to consumers,” says spokesperson Laura Clays.

In addition, there is also a large proportion of families who do not have sufficient resources to buy meat or fish. “Our Consumer Barometer shows that more than a third of households found it difficult to buy meat, fish or vegetarian alternatives in 2023,” it said.
