According to American intelligence services, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not directly order the killing of Alexei Navalny. That’s what the American newspaper writes Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Saturday, citing sources. The services, including the CIA, do not doubt Putin’s responsibility, but they suspect that he was not aware of the moment when the Russian opposition leader died.

According to the WSJ, that conclusion is contained in a report by the intelligence services. They base their findings on secret information, but also on an analysis of public facts. For example, according to the WSJ, it also looked at how Navalny’s death overshadowed Putin’s re-election in March.

Skeptical reactions

The US report has also been shared with European intelligence services. Some European countries are skeptical about the findings. They cannot imagine that Putin was not informed. An ally of Navalny, Leonid Volkov, also responds in the WSJ that he finds the position of the intelligence services naive. According to him, they do not understand how modern Russia works. “The idea that Putin was not informed and did not approve of Navalny’s death is ridiculous.”

Navalny died last February under suspicious circumstances in a prison camp in Sibia, where he had to serve a years-long prison sentence. Putin is widely held responsible for his death, including by US President Joe Biden.
