Harvey Weinstein’s conviction in New York for sexual abuse has been overturned. The court rules that the 2020 lawsuit was not fair, reports The New York Times. Weinstein remains in custody because his prison sentence in Los Angeles remains intact.

The court states that the judge in the case against Weinstein was biased and that the 23-year prison sentence he was given is not lawful. In the case, women testified about abuse allegations against Weinstein, but this trial revolved around other cases of sexual abuse.
The court therefore rules that he did not have a fair trial. The former film producer’s past behavior would have contributed to his conviction in this case, and that is not allowed. The vote to overturn the conviction was four to three.

However, this does not mean that Weinstein is now free. The former film producer was also sentenced to sixteen years in prison in Los Angeles. This statement still stands. Weinstein is currently in a New York jail. It is not clear whether he will be transferred.

Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct by many women and was sentenced to prison in New York four years ago. His prosecution was seen as a milestone for the MeToo movement.
