An employee of the Belgian agency Enabel and his son were killed in an Israeli bombardment of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip. This was reported by Minister of Development Cooperation Caroline Gennez (Vooruit). Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib (MR) summons the Israeli ambassador, while Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) explicitly accuses Israel.

“It was with great sadness that I learned that one of our Enabel employees was killed last night by an Israeli bombardment. Abdallah Nabhan (33) and his 7-year-old son Jamal were killed in an attack on Rafah,” Minister Gennez writes on X. His wife is in critical condition in hospital and fighting for her life. The couple’s two other children – aged five years and seven months – suffered minor injuries. Abdullah’s 65-year-old father, his 35-year-old brother and his six-year-old niece also lost their lives.

Abdallah was among those on a list of people eligible to leave Gaza, according to Gennez. “This list was provided to the Israeli authorities months ago. Yet he was not given the chance to save himself and his family,” Gennez said. She points to the “crushing” responsibility of the Israeli government. “The bombing of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians violates all international, humanitarian and war laws,” it said.

“Dramatic news,” Prime Minister Alexander De Croo responded today during question time in Parliament. He explicitly pointed the finger at the Israeli government. As far as he is concerned, he is “twice to blame”. Firstly, because, according to him, a country must do everything it can to prevent aid workers from being bombed, but especially because Belgium has been asking for four months to allow all Belgian aid workers and other rights holders to leave Gaza. “People have been refusing for four months,” said De Croo. “Innocent people and children are killed every day. Dear Israeli Government. This has to stop. Now.”

Minister Lahbib also states that bombing civilian areas and populations is contrary to international law. “I summon Israel’s ambassador to condemn this unacceptable act and demand an explanation,” the minister said.
