Tourists who want to visit Venice for a day must have an entrance ticket from Thursday. Such a ticket costs 5 euros. The city hopes to limit the enormous numbers of tourists in this way.

This is a test at the busiest times of the year. Venice has designated 29 days as busy days this year.

On those days, day trippers have to pay to visit the city. They must also plan their visit in advance. An entrance ticket is therefore not necessary if you also spend the night in the city.

In addition, an exception applies for children under the age of fourteen and people with disabilities. Day tourists who do not have a ticket risk a fine of 50 to 300 euros.

Last September, the Venice city council approved the plan to experiment with entrance tickets for day tourists. The city has been struggling with problems for years due to mass tourism.

The Venetian government hopes to limit the enormous influx of tourists in this way and hopes that it will encourage tourists to come to the city on quieter days. Up to 100,000 people come to Venice every day to see its famous canals and St. Mark’s Square.

Amsterdam sees Venice as a nightmare

Venice has been toying with the plan to make day tourists pay for some time, but previously postponed it for fear of declining revenues. Critics also think that the system is only a symbolic action. According to them, the entrance tickets will not reduce visitor numbers.

Partly due to the large numbers of tourists, the world heritage is in danger of being endangered, according to the UN organization UNESCO.

The Venetian trial is being watched closely in other areas where many tourists visit. Amsterdam also often cites Venice as an image of a city overrun by visitors.
