Four trucks collided with each other while entering the Tijsmans tunnel on Tuesday afternoon. The tunnel towards the Netherlands is blocked, traffic on the R2 has come to a complete standstill. The disruption will continue for some time, the Flemish Traffic Center advises drivers to take a detour via the R1.

The accident happened around 12 noon. “When entering the tunnel, four trucks had a rear-end collision,” says Jana Verdegem, spokesperson for the federal police. “There were no injuries in the collision, there was mainly serious material damage.”

The Traffic Police warns that the disruption will continue for some time. “At least two of the four trucks need to be towed. One of the vehicles has a leak in the oil tank. More than a hundred liters of fuel ended up on the roadway. The fire brigade is on site to clean the road surface,” says Verdegem.

The Flemish Traffic Center recommends avoiding the R2 towards the Netherlands and detouring via the R1.
