HMD launches first smartphones without Nokia brand name

--

HMD announces the Pulse, Pulse+ and Pulse Pro. These are the first smartphones that the Finnish company releases under its own brand name, without Nokia.

HDM has been known as the ‘maker of Nokia phones’ since 2014 (although it prefers to be called Human Global Devices), but the company now wants to get rid of that reputation. In line with rumors that have been going on for a while, the company is announcing three new smartphones that do not bear the name of the iconic brand. HMD launches the Pulse, Pulse+ and Pulse Pro completely under its own name.

Pulse Pro, Pulse+ and Pulse

The announcement is rather sparse with specifications, but HMD seems to stick to its proven recipe of affordable and reliable devices, without too many frills. The ‘top model’ Pulse Pro costs barely 180 euros. For that price you get a 50 MP camera on the back, but also on the front. The front camera also has a function that allows you to take hands-free photos.

The Pulse+ and Pulse are even cheaper with an entry price of 160 euros and 140 euros. Both models have 4 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of storage. The Pulse+ also has a 50 MP camera on the back, the Pulse has a 13 MP camera.

Each of the three devices contains a 5000 mAh that HMD claims can last up to 59 hours. Charging the battery will take almost the same amount of time. The Pulse Pro gets a 20 W charger, the Pulse+ and Pulse a 10 W charger.

HMD also highlights the repairability of the phones. The screen, charging port and battery will be easy to replace for those with steady hands. In any case, HMD does not take the right to repair lightly. The entry-level model is available now, the Pulse+ and Pulse Pro will be released at a later and unspecified date.

Without Nokia

We are curious whether HDM can also do it without Nokia. In any case, the three devices offer an interesting alternative for smartphone users who are satisfied with basic functionalities. A survey by ITdaily among readers shows that fifteen percent do not want to spend more than 200 euros on a new smartphone.

Those who think back with nostalgia to the Nokia phones do not have to fear that HMD wants to make the iconic brand name disappear. The Finnish company previously stated that the devices it releases under its own name will exist alongside the Nokia phones. HMD took over the brand name from Microsoft in 2014 and has the exclusive right of use.
