Cian Uijtdebroeks beams in the white jersey after 2 Giro days: “I couldn’t believe it at first”

--

Only positivity for Cian Uijtdebroeks on his Giro debut as an employee of Visma-Lease a Bike. 7th at Oropa, 4th in the rankings and the white jersey as the best youngster are the good figures on the young Belgian’s report. “Of course you don’t want to just hand over that sweater,” he beams.

A more than successful opening weekend for Cian Uijtdebroeks on his Giro debut. Our 21-year-old compatriot finished 7th on the first uphill finish, is now 4th in the general classification and leads that of the young people.

“That’s fantastic, isn’t it? I didn’t drive around thinking about getting the white jersey, but I just went as fast as I could,” Uijtdebroeks beams.

“At first I couldn’t believe it when I heard that I had it. I thought: “They must have calculated something wrong”, but I am very happy with my first jersey in a Grand Tour.”

I felt really good and am looking forward to the days with longer climbs.

Will the youth classification now become a goal in itself in the coming weeks?

“Of course you don’t just want to give up that jersey. It is still a very long fight, with time trials and high mountains to come.”

Uijtdebroeks progressed steadily at his own pace during the climb to Oropa. “I knew that I wouldn’t be the fastest in a sprint at the end. But I felt really good on the steep parts.”

“I’m looking forward to the days with longer climbs,” he concludes combatively and looking forward to more.

Uijtdebroeks climbed strongly at his own pace on Oropa.
