AA Gent cashed in January on Malick Fofana, Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban, a choice that was not appreciated by the board due to the collapse that followed. However, the damage could have been even greater.

The Buffaloes recently announced that Julien de Sart had extended his contract. The 29-year-old mainstay in midfield, who has already scored 16 goals and six assists in 138 appearances for AA Gent, is now on contract until mid-2028.

German offer rejected

When this happy news was announced, it was said that De Sart was receiving interest from abroad. He also confirms this in interviews with The last news and The newspapaer. “But this was the right choice,” he said.

Both newspapers reveal that De Sart received specific interest from the Bundesliga and MLS. AA Gent refused according to HLN even an offer from Germany. Letting another strongman go was not an option at that time.

De Sart remains in Ghent

De Sart himself then also thought that the people of Ghent would compete for the prizes. That turned out not to be the case, but he does not regret his choice. “I already have some foreign experience in England, although the Premier League remains a dream.”

One that may never come true, De Sart realizes. However, along with stability for his family, the status and respect he enjoys at the Planet Group Arena ease the pain. “Call it a decision of the mind,” he concludes.
