Sven Nys was also over the moon on Thursday after his son Thibau’s victory in the Tour de Romandie, his first at WorldTour level. However, he – together with his team Baloise Trek Lions – is also experiencing some concerns.

Trek leaves

After all, title sponsor Trek is in its last year. They will end their collaboration with the team at the end of 2024, at least as co-main sponsor. “Trek will remain present on the jerseys, but no longer as a second name sponsor. The result is that we have to look for an additional partner,” Nys explains in Het Nieuwsblad.

And that search should soon yield success, although Nys remains optimistic. “From a sporting point of view, we did very well last winter. We are the best team in the UCI rankings, we have several of the better riders on board. So I assume that, together with the people of Golazo, we will succeed in finding new partners.”

“If that doesn’t work, then it’s not just us, but cross-country in general that has a problem,” the team manager realizes, however, that time is running out and the need is very great. This, of course, is to stay afloat financially.

Security until 2026

In that sense, it is positive that they still have sufficient prospects for the next two years. “The contract with first name sponsor Baloise was extended last year until the end of 2026,” Nys indicates that there is still sufficient certainty.

“We have extended our most important riders until the end of 2026, a number of cross riders have now also been placed with the Lidl-Trek road team and there are a number of talented young people with whom we are already working. We are building the future and want to consolidate what we have.”
