Medication and other tips

‘Fortunately, I now have fewer migraine attacks, thanks to the right combination of medication. Last year I had more than twelve attacks a month. Due to the new additional medication metoprolol, this number has decreased to approximately five times per month. Compared to those twelve times, it is a significant improvement. Still, I don’t want to cheer too early, because you never know how things can turn out. If I feel an attack coming on, I also take other medication, which often makes my migraine disappear within an hour. They are heavy medications with side effects such as fatigue and drowsiness. But better that than having to suffer the pain.

In addition to the medication, I have adjusted my daily routine so that I have fewer complaints. I get at least seven to eight hours of sleep, go to sleep for one hour, stop drinking alcohol, watch my diet, drink enough water and eat on time. These adjustments have become very normal for me, but sometimes I am reminded of their necessity. For example, my boyfriend sometimes goes to festivals for work, where I can also go. That’s difficult, because I can’t apply my routine there. Can I get enough sleep? Is there enough food available? Do I need all my medications? These are all questions that start running through my head, which only causes me stress.

The Brain Foundation also emphasizes the importance of these simple adjustments. ‘In addition to taking medication, it is also advisable to follow a few rules of life. These reduce the chance of a migraine attack,” says the Brain Foundation.

  • Make sure you sleep and eat at regular times.
  • Make sure you exercise enough.
  • Do not use drugs or drink alcohol, or at least not more than one drink per day.
  • Do not smoke. This has a negative effect on migraines, but can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
