For the first time in his career, Englishman Kyren Wilson was crowned world snooker champion last night. After winning the final against Welshman Jak Jones, Wilson shed tears. “I told you I wasn’t going to cry anymore, but I can’t help it,” Wilson sobbed.

Even before the last balls had been played in the World Cup final, Kyren Wilson’s eyes were streaming. Once it was clear that the Englishman had won, he had tears in his eyes. “I can’t see anything anymore,” he chuckled to the ref and his opponent, Jak Jones.

He then let those tears flow once the match was completely decided. “One of the worst things on YouTube is a video of me crying at the Masters. This is going to get much worse. I said I wouldn’t cry anymore, but I can’t help it,” the world champion stammered. .

“This means so much to my entire family. My parents sacrificed their entire lives so that I could be here. It’s been a rollercoaster since I was 6. This is a dream come true.”

Wilson celebrated his world title with his two sons. They were emotionally charged hugs, because his son Bailey was ill for a while and also had surgery after an accident at school. Wilson’s wife Sophie was diagnosed with epilepsy after suffering a stroke.

He tried to forget those family worries at the snooker table with the help of hypnosis. “To empty my bucket of stress and be able to play snooker more freely,” Wilson said earlier.

And that has clearly helped him this World Cup. “I gave everything. It was important to stay focused. Jak made it very difficult for me, but I held out. For him it was his first World Cup final. I think he will definitely be back here again .”

Wilson already had that final experience: in 2020 he received snooker lessons from grandmaster Ronnie O’Sullivan, who was his dominant self in the World Cup final with 18-8. But now the 32-year-old Englishman has got a taste for it.

“I believe I can be a multiple world champion. I would be disappointed if it was limited to just one world title,” it sounds ambitious. “I think that first world title is the most difficult. I have already achieved that. No one can take this away from me.”

With his first world title, Wilson now also hopes to finally be number 1 in his own home. “My eldest son’s idol is Cristiano Ronaldo. Hopefully I have now jumped over Ronaldo,” he laughs.

Kyren Wilson now also hopes to be his eldest son Finley’s idol.
