Anderlecht won with a clear 3-0 score against Cercle Brugge on Wednesday evening. The Purple & White remains in the lead in the Champions’ Play-offs, with two points more than Club Brugge. Yet an upset Brian Riemer appeared in front of the cameras: during the match a fan in the stadium had become unwell and would die shortly later in the hospital.

It was trainer Brian Riemer himself who announced this during his TV interview with Eleven Sports. “I want to start by saying that there is sad news to report,” said the visibly upset Dane. “A fan of ours died tonight after becoming unwell in the first half. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family. On a night like this, football is irrelevant. Our thoughts really go out to them.”

The fan became unwell in the first half and was resuscitated for a long time in the main stand. During halftime, fans were not allowed to leave the stands, so that the emergency services – fire brigade and ambulance – could safely evacuate the fan from the upper ring of the stadium from the adjacent parking lot. The supporter was taken to hospital, but died there.

Miron Muslic also expressed his condolences at the press conference on behalf of the Cercle family.
