KAA Gent is more firmly in the saddle as leader in the Europe Play-offs after a 0-2 victory on the field of STVV. Goals at the end of both halves sealed the fate of the home team, which is also gradually having a penalty problem. For STVV it was the first defeat for their own people since October.

STVV – KAA Gent in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: 5 minutes before the end, everything is still possible for STVV, until Mitrovic heads the decisive 0-2 into the goal. The tension is gone in a moment, the home team no longer gets a chance after that blow.
  • Man of the match: Despite the 0-2 loss, Mathias Delorge-Knieper made a big impression today. The midfielder was omnipresent and delivered great passes. There were no special standouts on the Ghent side, but Roef was alert for the entire match and saved another penalty.
  • Remarkable: We can gradually speak of a penalty ghost at STVV. The Limburgers failed from eleven meters in this match for the fourth time in a row. Steuckers and Kaya missed earlier this season, now twice in a row Koita has not been able to score from the spot.

Due to Kandouss’ injury and Torunarigha’s suspension, Hein Vanhaezebrouck gave 16-year-old Jorthy Mokio a starting position. The central defender was the 5th youngest starting debutant ever in the top flight.

However, he could not prevent STVV from getting off to the best start. Zahiroleslam easily went over the leg of Julien De Sart, Koita had an excellent opportunity from eleven meters to give the home team the lead.

However, the club’s top scorer missed that opportunity, the fourth consecutive penalty that STVV left unused. Steuckers also did too little with the rebound.

STVV remained the best team, Steuckers aimed wide of the target with a strong Roef. Ghent did little in return, Tissoudali and Surdez – who was also allowed to start for the first time – could not get the ball past Suzuki.

Just before half time it was a prize for the visitors. Brown served Surdez on the left flank. He pushed the ball to Tissoudali, who cleverly went past a doubting Godeau. The Moroccan striker’s finish was excellent, and Ghent went into halftime with a flattering lead.

After the break, STVV immediately decided to grab the visitors by the throat. Roef had to push Koita’s shot into a corner, after which Godeau just incomprehensibly kicked it over from a few meters.

Delorge and Steuckers continued to hurt the Ghent defense, Watanabe saved an attempt from the latter for an empty goal.

After that attempt, Sint-Truiden allowed itself to be lulled to sleep by the many interruptions in the game, Ghent had everything under control. In the end, Mitrovic headed the decisive 0-2 into the goal on a corner kick: over and out for the home team.

STVV loses a home match in the competition for the first time since October 8 and is gradually putting the European dream aside, Ghent can already smell the win in the Europe Play-offs thanks to the draw against KV Mechelen.

Reactions after STVV – KAA Gent

  • Mathias Delorge: “I’m very disappointed, 8 times out of 10 you win this match. Every time they got the goal it was our own mistake. This is very sad, I think we controlled the match for 88 minutes, the 2 minutes we If they don’t do that, they score every time. I don’t know why, everyone was fresh. On another day, those chances will come, but unfortunately not today.
  • Tarik Tissoudali: “It is important that we won, it is difficult to play here. The artificial grass is difficult, this field is a drama. However, I am very happy. Efficiency was the difference, they had more chances. The victory gives confidence, now play We are at home in front of our own fans on our good field. We hope to play the last matches for Europe.”
  • Hein Vanhaezebrouck: “I’m always satisfied when we win. It’s not easy here, STVV is good. We also give away another stupid penalty, luckily we have Roef in the goal. He already stops an eleven meter. After that we saw balance, although we got They had more chances. We were efficient, the goalkeeper and defense were good. The new starting players can bring more, although it was quite okay for the first time. We may have to analyze this match carefully pick it up and take it with us to the future. If we do our work, we will be on the right track to the European ticket, but we are not going to sell the skin of the bear yet, that would not be smart.”
  • Thorsten Fink: “It’s been a long time since we lost. They scored twice, maybe thanks to their experience. We played a good game. We had good ball possession and even got a penalty. We lose because we don’t score. Both halves were good, the first one we controlled a little more. We could have scored, but we didn’t do that today. Then you lose. I don’t regret anything, everyone was no better than us, the players did everything they could and have shown that to the fans, the victories will follow. We now want to fight for 8th place, that is a realistic goal.”

End: Flattered victory for Ghent

Bourdeaud’hui whistles three times, the match is over. STVV started the second half scorchingly and missed several promising opportunities. After minute 55 the match got into a rut that never left. A few minutes before the end, Mitrovic headed STVV completely into the canvas, Ghent took another three points and seemed certain of winning the Europe Play-offs.

AA Gent has put up a wall, STVV won’t get through it twice.

Unnecessary mistake Kaya

Kaya once again goes way too wildly towards the ball with a straight leg. The striker can be happy that he does not hit Brown on the leg and therefore gets a yellow card.

5 – extra time

An extra 5 minutes will be added.

The match is now completely closed. STVV taps the ball aimlessly, Ghent knows it has won the game.

The decision!

The first chance of the second half is immediately the right one for Ghent. Mitrovic towers above everything and everyone on a corner kick and heads in beautifully across the corner. STVV is on its way to a first home defeat since October 8.

Side net for Delorge

Delorge takes a good shot at the short corner, the ball ends up in the side net via Agbor’s leg. STVV seems to have started a final offensive.

Bertaccini immediately brings some life into the brewery. However, the Liège resident has bad luck and slips away during his action.

Fink wants to protect STVV’s home reputation. The German coach brings Bertaccini and Barnes for Vanwesemael and Ito.
