Hein Vanhaezebrouck will soon leave the Planet Group Arena after five matches and 368 official matches on the bench of KAA Gent. His contract expires and will not be renewed. A farewell that had been written in the stars since Sam Baro took over the club.

Hein is an acquired taste. With Ivan De Witte and Michel Louwagie he had a sounding board that he will not find anywhere else. A duo that largely left him alone when it came to sports. Things sometimes didn’t work out there either, but at their weekly friendly meetings the wrinkles were always ironed out.

Coucke in the dug out

Sam Baro, however, is a different story. New to football and not used to employees taking aim at the big boss. After all, you have to take that into account when you have Vanhaezebrouck as a coach. The 60-year-old Kortrijkzaan does the same with his board as he does with his group of players: he keeps them sharp.

That is an interaction that is not for everyone. During his short period at Anderlecht he also clashed with Marc Coucke. When he appeared in the dressing room and in the dug out, Hein had to seriously bite his lip. In the meantime, he no longer has a good word to say about it.

The way Vanhaezebrouck wants to lead a team is actually completely based on the English model. Louwagie and De Witte allowed him to be a coach and a sporting manager at the same time. Baro put an end to this and instructed Louwagie to cash in players before the New Year.

Baro thinks economically

With the story about Gift Orban in mind, he did not want to let the train pass for Malick Fofana and Hugo Cuypers. Six months earlier, Orban could have raised Ghent about ten million more. In Baro’s entrepreneurial mind the settlement was quickly made.

Not that Vanhaezebrouck was unrealistic, but in Hein’s mind it is impossible to reconcile that he – with so much experience and football knowledge – was ignored in the decision-making process. The sneers at his own government were countless and did not stop.

To the point that Baro soon had enough and the decision to stop the collaboration had been made months ago. Ghent will have a clear structure in which the coach is simply the coach.

Who will hand over the reins to Hein?

And Vanhaezebrouck? Will it still continue? He has already shown several times that he has seen it all and wants to make time for his family. Although… there are several challenges that are tailor-made for him for next season.

Wouldn’t Hein’s extroverted character suit the Tawny Owl? Although working again with a business man like Paul Gheysens will not be that attractive. That is the case at every Belgian top club. Is there anyone still willing to give a coach full reins?

We don’t see him starting another assignment if the answer to that question is negative…
