Jonas Vingegaard is currently active in the Tour of the Basque Country. The two-time Tour winner of Visma-Lease a Bike took some time to relax The Telegraph to talk about his family and Wout van Aert’s crash.
“Many things are not worth it. It is a dangerous sport and you travel a lot. As a result, you are often far away from your family and the people you love most. Of course I love this sport and I did choose it, but I will always advise my children not to choose this profession,” says Vingegaard.
Daughter Frida will therefore not immediately have to aspire to a career as a cyclist. “We are together at different times, but during the races we have contact via FaceTime. It is special to experience how Frida grows and develops. She speaks in a mix of Danish and English, which is nice to see. I am very proud of her and also of my wife Trine, who takes care of a large part of her upbringing,” the family man continued.
Poor Wout
Wout van Aert’s crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen also hit Vingegaard hard. It is not yet certain whether the top rider from Herentals will be ready for the Giro d’Italia. If he does not reach the Italian Grand Tour, there is a chance that he will participate in the Tour de France alongside Vingegaard.
“The first thing is to hope for Wout that he recovers well,” Vingegaard began. “He shows every time that he is a super strong force. In any case, a fit Van Aert would be better for the team and me in the Tour de France. However, I also understand that after five participations in a row, he is now a chose the Giro once. There is a lot of uncertainty now, but his health comes first.”
