KRC Genk has had a poor season so far. The European part and the Croky Cup were not a success. The top six was only just reached. CEO Erik Gerits spoke about the season of the Limburgers. Racing Genk wants to get a European ticket.

“We are looking forward to those Champions’ Play-Offs. From 3rd to 6th place we are on the same page. A lot can still happen. We owe it to our status to go to the extreme,” Gerits said in TVL Sports Café.

European ticket very important

“We start at home against Union SG and we can also be a sharp judge in the title battle. I have full confidence in the qualities of our team. Hopefully we will surprise in the play-offs.”

Genk also needs Europe financially. “A European ticket is very important. We have a financial deficit every year and we have to correct that through transfers and European football. There is more money to be made. So we definitely want to get a European ticket.”

Genk must regroup

Gerits admits that the season has not been successful for the time being. “We had hoped to spend the winter in Europe and go far in the cup. That didn’t work, but we will make it to the play-offs. We still have some things to put right this season.”

Stef Wijnants has a gloomy outlook for Genk. “If they don’t play better, they won’t play any role in the play-offs. But things can change quickly in the play-offs. They certainly won’t become champions. Third place is possible, but then they have to find their way to the goal more smoothly.”
