Meloni announced her leadership position during a major congress of her party in the city of Pescara, on the Adriatic Sea. Meloni has now been Prime Minister for a year and a half after her party’s success in the national elections in 2022. She now wants to do the same in Europe as in Italy: “Create a majority that unites the right-wing forces and definitively refers the left to the opposition.”

However, the fact that she is on the European list does not mean that she wants to exchange her position as prime minister for a European job after the elections. Meloni says that she is among the party leaders because she wants to “ask the Italians if they are satisfied with the work we have done in Italy and Europe.”

But in addition to being the leader of the Italian government and her party, she is also increasingly presenting herself as the “leader of European conservatives”. Italy is the third largest economy in the European Union and Meloni is playing an increasingly important role in the EU after Germany and France. According to Meloni, “European conservatives want to have a decisive role in changing European politics.”
