The ex-Barcelona, Juventus and PSG player was found guilty of sexually assaulting a young woman in December 2022. The Brazilian was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison.
Alves’ lawyer, Inés Guardiola, appealed the verdict of the Court of Appeal in Barcelona and asked for Alves’ release until the verdict is final. The Court of Appeal in Barcelona accepted this request last week, after which the Brazilian was allowed to leave prison pending the final verdict.
Only problem: a bail of one million euros had to be paid. Initially it was assumed, also by Alves, that Neymar’s family would arrange this. Neymar senior in particular has openly expressed his support in recent months. At the beginning of January they gave Alves more than 150,000 euros to defend his criminal case.
But the Neymar clan withdrew. They don’t want anything to do with the case anymore. In a statement from the family it sounds like this: “For us, this case is over. Point. The court has pronounced its verdict. This matter is no longer within our reach. We don’t want the Neymar name to be linked to the case anymore. We hope Alves finds all the answers he is looking for. With the help of their own family.”
Which made it not easy for Alves to find a million euros. Last Friday he asked for an extra hour of time to find the money. In vain. Which meant he also had to spend last weekend in Brians 2. But in the end that weekend turned out to be helpful and he can cough up the sum today. In the evening he left prison – amid great media interest.
Now that Alves is free for the time being, there are some restrictions attached. For example, he is not allowed to leave Spanish territory, he must report to court every week, both his Brazilian and Spanish passports have been revoked and he is also not allowed to come within one kilometer of the victim.
