“I’m panicking, please help me”: Russian tennis player robbed for 10,000 euros during tournament in Madrid | Tennis

--

Maria Timofeeva (20) is going through hell. The Russian number 99 in the world was robbed of no less than 10,000 euros during the WTA tournament in Madrid without losing her bank card. It is the second time in six months that she has been robbed in Spain. In a panic, she shared a video on social media.

Russian tennis star Maria Timofeeva did not enjoy the WTA tournament in Madrid. On a sporting level, the 20-year-old talent lost in the second qualifying round, which meant she did not end up on the main table. But extra sporty, her week in the Spanish capital really became a drama.

Suddenly, Timofeeva noticed that no less than 10,000 euros had disappeared from her account. However, she always had her bank card with her. Visibly affected – because it was not the first time she had experienced this in Spain – she sent a video to the world via Instagram. “I’m back in Spain after six months and I’ve been robbed again. I would like to share my story and I could really use some advice from people who have been in a similar situation or who can tell me how this happened. I’m panicking because I don’t know how or what. I always physically had my card with me, except for one occasion when I left it in my room while my room was being cleaned.”

So strange circumstances. The Russian asks her followers to share her message. “Spread this and be aware that this can happen here. It’s a prize every damn time I come here. It’s just really getting out of hand.”

Timofeeva herself also took action. She visited the local police and hopes to recover the amount. For safety’s sake, the police had her account frozen, because all purchases were made through her account near where the Russian resides. “Normally you need a confirmation code to pay that appears on my phone, but that has not always happened here.”

Belgian tennis star Elise Mertens is also currently staying in Madrid. In the singles she lost in the third round to the American Sloane Stephens (WTA 33) in three sets: 3-6, 6-3 and 6-1. In doubles, Mertens is the first seed in Madrid with the Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh. They will meet the American Asia Muhammad and the Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi in the first doubles round.
