The blades of the legendary cabaret theater Moulin Rouge crashed in Paris last night. The facade of the building in the tourist district of Pigalle also suffered damage, but according to the fire brigade there were no casualties. The management rules out “malicious intent”.

The incident occurred between 2 and 3 a.m., various French media report. There would be no further risk of collapse. “It is the first time that something like this has happened since the opening of the Moulin Rouge on October 6, 1889,” the theater said. According to the tourist attraction, the mechanism of the blades is checked every week and no problems have been identified.

The blades ended up on the Boulevard de Clichy. The first three letters ‘MOU’ were also dragged along. No one was injured. Nothing is yet known about the cause.

French media report that the building itself is not in danger. The doors will open again this evening. “It will be a special evening, but the spectacle continues, that is the most important thing,” said Jean-Victor Clerico, director of the Moulin Rouge.

The Moulin Rouge is one of Paris’s most famous theaters and buildings and has featured in numerous novels and films. It was built in 1889, the same year as the Eiffel Tower. The architect of the building was mainly Eduard Niermans, from Enschede, who is considered one of the most prominent architects of the Belle Époque in France.

The Belle Époque or the beautiful era was a period of relatively much prosperity, peace and development of the arts and science in Europe. It lasted from the end of the nineteenth century until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Two shows are given every evening in the show temple, each attracting 850 visitors.
