How do our politicians score in the Chamber, in the Flemish Parliament and in the Flemish and federal governments? Ten weeks before the elections, Nieuwsblad presents all politicians with their reports.

On June 9 we will go to the polls again. For the Flemish, federal and European elections. We choose parties and politicians that we want to see play a crucial role in the coming years. But how have they done in the past five years? Which politicians shocked parliament from the pulpit? Which ministers excelled, in achievements or in absence?

Political report from the Nieuwsblad

  • Thursday: all members of the Flemish Parliament and all MPs
  • Friday: Jan Jambon and all his Flemish ministers
  • Saturday: Alexander De Croo and all his federal ministers

Politics is not an easy craft. Certainly not as a minister. The hardest-working ministers do not always get the most attention. Others just communicate without doing much. For the ministers’ reports, we listened to various experts, the sectors that the ministers had to manage and colleagues in the government. We then assessed their performance based on three criteria – achievements, vision and communication – each of which we gave a different specific weight.

Ministers are of course nothing without a properly functioning parliament. The public arena where major debates take place, ministers are critically questioned and legislation gets the final push. A good MP knows how to identify problem areas in policy and does something about them. But there are also parliamentarians who travel to Brussels every week to press a button and then quickly return to their hometown. To get a good idea of what is happening in front of and behind the scenes of parliament, we let the faction leaders of all parties shine a light on the entire parliament. The synthesis of those conversations can be found in the parliamentary reports, together with a number of objective parameters. The scores awarded are the result of a thorough debate within the editorial staff, based on all the available information. (ed)
