16-year-old driver flees from police control… only to get stuck moments later: “Going for a wild ride with my uncle’s car” | Willebroek

--

In Willebroek, the Rivierenland police zone has removed a very young driver from traffic. The young man, only sixteen years old for a few months, had borrowed his uncle’s flashy car for a ride, but suddenly encountered a police checkpoint. “He clearly didn’t feel like doing that. Resulting in a near collision,” it said.

The police had stationed themselves last weekend along the Dendermondsesteenweg in Willebroek near the Fort of Breendonk. “The car in which the young driver was driving around immediately caught the attention of our colleagues because of the very young appearance of the driver and his passenger. When we wanted to pull him over, he accelerated,” says Dirk Van de Sande of the Rivierenland police zone. “The young driver drove right next to our WODCA car and then drove at too high speed through a bend and in the direction of Fort Breendonk.”

Mud

What the young driver did not know was that the asphalt road stops a little further on and turns into a cart track. Or better unpaved ground. “Given the fact that the driver drove into this at full speed, his left side got stuck in the mud,” Van de Sande continues. The young driver originally refused to identify himself. He could not show an identity card or driver’s license. Not entirely unexpected given the young age of the driver. “He had only just turned sixteen years old,” the police spokesperson explains.

Towed

He said he had borrowed the car from his uncle. He was sleeping at the time of the incident and therefore knew nothing. The uncle was notified and arrived on the scene. According to the police, he did not seem very happy about it. The car had to be towed out of the mud. The sixteen-year-old driver will soon be allowed to explain it together with his parents at the police court in Mechelen.

It is not the first time that young drivers in Willebroek borrow a relative’s car and then make a fuss. For example, in November 2021, a thirteen-year-old took his brother’s car and crashed it into a parked van. And in April last year, two minors ended up with a car in the Brussels-Scheldt Sea Canal in Willebroek while joyriding.
