Flemish Brabant and Limburg are the most motorized provinces in Belgium. This is evident from figures from the European statistical agency Eurostat. Limburg has 540 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants.

With 683 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, Flemish Brabant is by far the most motorized province, as shown by figures dating from 2022. In addition to Flemish Brabant, Limburg (540 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants) and Walloon Brabant (524) are also more motorized than other provinces The average in the European Union is 560 cars per inhabitants, with outliers mainly in Italy.

According to Eurostat, differences are often linked to the economic situation, but specific circumstances may also play a role. For example, the statistics office points to the favorable tax regime in the Italian region Valle d’Aosta, which has 2,339 cars per thousand inhabitants.

Brussels is not the only major city with a figure on the low side (390 cars per 1,000 inhabitants). The ten European regions with the lowest number of cars per inhabitant include the metropolises Berlin (331) and Vienna (366). (b)
