A vehicle crashed into a tree in the Heirweg in Idegem, Geraardsbergen, on Wednesday evening. Three occupants of the vehicle, young women in their early twenties, had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and were injured. One of them was taken to the hospital in Aalst with life-threatening injuries.

It was around 9.15 pm on Wednesday evening that a vehicle carrying three people in their twenties left the track on the Heirweg for an as yet unknown reason and crashed head-on into a tree. After the initial impact, the vehicle was thrown into the field. The three occupants were injured and taken to hospital.

The impact of the collision was extremely severe. One of the passengers was seriously injured in the thighs and broke her wrist. She was taken to the ASZ in Aalst with life-threatening injuries, according to spokesperson Karolien De Turck of the Geraardsberge police.

Burns

Another passenger showed burns to the neck caused by the seat belt. The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries but was in shock. The MUG team and several ambulances arrived on site to provide first aid to the victims.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident. “The law does not know what led to the accident,” says Karolien De Turck. “Tests done by the driver showed that no alcohol or drugs were involved.”

The prosecutor’s office arrived on the scene. The Heirweg was closed to all traffic for quite some time.
