The figures from Smart to Antwerp from the city of Antwerp show that the bicycle will remain the preferred means of transport in 2023.

39.8 percent: This is the share of employees who use the bicycle to commute to work. 50.1 percent of young people use the bicycle to go to school and 42.2 percent use the bicycle to go to a leisure activity. “This makes the bicycle score higher than any other means of transport,” says Koen Kennis (N-VA), Antwerp’s Alderman for Mobility. “The car remains the second choice for work (38.6 percent) and in leisure time (33.8 percent). After cycling, public transport (27.8%) is the most popular choice for students.”

4,310: This is the number of Velo shared bicycles in Antwerp. In addition, there are 1,210 shared bicycles from other providers, such as Donkey Republic. In Antwerp there is a supply of 2,900 shared scooters and 1,487 shared cars.

621: This is the number of licensed taxis in Antwerp.

“A higher supply always goes hand in hand with higher use, which means that all shared mobility together would account for almost 10 million trips in 2023,” says Kennis. “More than 90 percent of this happened with a shared bicycle or scooter. “

767: This is the number of kilometers of slow roads where no motorized transport is allowed, including 583 kilometers of cycling infrastructure and 21.7 kilometers of bicycle streets.

1,501: Number of public charging points in Antwerp, of which 32 are fast chargers.

63: This is the number of neighborhood bicycle sheds, good for 1,633 bicycles. Antwerp has 35 neighborhood car parks with a capacity of 1,567 parking spaces. The Park-and-Rides on the edge of the city have a capacity of 5,089 cars.

147: Number of companies that collaborate with the city of Antwerp regarding their mobility. They represent 71,183 employees. Last year, 631 employees tested alternative means of transport during a one-month trial period. The majority of them then opted for a sustainable move.

“These figures illustrate a change in behavior in the field of mobility,” Kennis concludes.
