Fire during construction of new OXY project in Brussels: no injuries | Brussels

--

A fire broke out on the roof of the OXY building between De Brouckèreplein and Muntplein in Brussels this morning. The fire brigade quickly arrived on site to fight the fire. All workers and the crane operator were able to be brought to safety. The fire has now been extinguished.

Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade, confirmed that the fire is currently being extinguished. “The fire appears to have started in an old ventilation group, but the exact cause is still being investigated. Fortunately, the spread to the rest of the roof was prevented and no injuries were reported.”

There are two medical teams and three ambulances at the site, along with four fire engines and three ladder trucks. Furthermore, a security perimeter has also been established and De Brouckèreplein and Muntplein are currently inaccessible. The emergency services are working hard to get the situation under control and prevent further damage.

The OXY project, carried out by developers Immobel and Whitewood, should mean a new future for the old Muntcentrum with offices, homes, restaurants and a shopping center. It is being renovated into a multifunctional space that respects the original design but still offers a modern interpretation. The design is by the Norwegian firm Snøhetta and the Belgian firm Binst Architects.

The project includes offices, facilities, retail space, a hotel with 316 rooms, catering with a rooftop bar and 112 homes of different sizes. What is special is the presence of many terraces with plants, including a public roof garden of 6,000 m².
