Last summer Anderlecht managed to bring Thorgan Hazard back to Belgium. For a while there were rumors that Eden would also follow his example, because after his departure from Real Madrid, the former Red Devil captain was linked to Union for a long time.

The idea was that the Hazard brothers would all play in Brussels, because younger brother Kylian was still working at RWDM at the time. It didn’t get that far in the end, because Hazard finally decided to end his career at the age of 32.

Hazard did not want to return to Belgium

In an extensive interview with VOO Hazard returns once again to the rumors about a transfer to Union. “Then they would already be champions,” he winks. “I have not had contact with Union, but I have had contact with several other people in Belgium and abroad. But in the end we did not feel like coming back to live in Belgium.”

After all, Hazard’s decision to retire was largely inspired by his family, who are very happy in Madrid. Hazard did not want to take them away from their familiar environment, even though he actually had another plan to end his career.

MLS was basically the dream

“I actually wanted to end my career in the MLS and play there for another two or three years,” he reveals. “I told Christian Benteke while laughing that I would come and play with him in Washington. That way I could still play with my buddy and give him some assists. But then everyone would have had to move and that slowed me down.”

In addition, Hazard had no motivation to continue his career at any cost and so, after several months of consideration, the announcement was made in October that he was calling it quits as a footballer.
