Three days after the major action against nuisance in Antwerp North, which was attended by media and ministers, the police announced the results. Fourteen serious nuisance perpetrators were arrested. They are all living illegally in our country. Ten people have been transferred to a closed institution with a view to repatriation.

The police checked 67 people and eighteen vehicles. “One person was caught red-handed selling drugs,” says police spokesperson Wouter Bruyns. “Another person fled when the police wanted to check him. When the inspectors were able to catch him, they found packages of hashish and cocaine in his bag.”

Both were arrested and brought before the investigating judge. The two are staying illegally in our country. The investigating judge placed them under arrest.

During the action, twelve other people were also found who were staying illegally in our country. “They have all been administratively arrested,” Bruyns confirms. “Ten of them have been transferred to a closed institution with a view to repatriation, including to Morocco.”

Unruly behavior

Four people drank alcohol in an area where this is not permitted. Two of them had previously received a warning and were therefore administratively arrested. The two others received a GAS fine. Four people were caught with user quantities of drugs in their pockets. They were offered an immediate amicable settlement. The police also took action against people who cause a nuisance by looking for a dealer. Three people were found during the action. They received a GAS fine.

The police found another person who had been flagged because he had behaved unruly earlier. “He still had to be interrogated for those facts. That has now happened and his file is being further monitored,” Bruyns said.

During the action, a bicycle was also found whose lock had been cut. The police will look among the reports to see who the bicycle could belong to. Finally, the police reported twenty vehicles for being illegally parked.

Extensive efforts

Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) looks with satisfaction at the results of the action: “The sustained efforts of our local police in Antwerp North are necessary to ensure safety and quality of life in the neighborhood,” says De Wever.

“Before I became mayor, desperate traders in the area confronted illegal criminals who made their lives miserable. We should never see those kinds of scenes in our city again.”
