The city of Antwerp recently opened two new Velo stations on the Left Bank. You can now also lend a red and white bicycle to the Sint-Anna ferry service and to the Park and Ride. The total number of Velo stations in the city is 310.
Two new Velo stations recently opened on the Left Bank, at the Sint-Anna ferry service and at the Park and Ride. An additional 36 places will be added at each station, bringing the counter to 9,849 places for the red-white bicycles in Antwerp. Alderman for Mobility Koen Kennis (N-VA) is pleased that the modal shift is being further strengthened. “We notice that more and more people want to make the switch to sustainable travel and we can encourage that in this way.”
According to the ships, both stops are important mobility hubs that can be further expanded and connected. “The use of the Park and Ride Linkeroever is increasing month after month, and according to figures from the Maritime Services and Coastal Agency, almost 700,000 people took the Sint-Annaver ferry in 2023. This year there will already be more than 100,000 crossings. The nearest Velo station on Frederik van Eedenplein is also by far the busiest on the Left Bank. For that reason, the installation of Velo stations at both locations is a logical step,” says Kennis.
School on wharf safari
When the two new stations were opened, the fifth-year students of Villa Stuivenberg were on a construction safari. After winning the Lantis Ringland Competition, they will today receive a tour of the Oosterweel Works yard. Alderman Knowledge took the opportunity to give the students some more information about the new Velo stations and other mobility options. (IT)
