A fatal accident involving a speed pedelec occurred on Monday morning on the Kalmthoutsesteenweg in Wuustwezel. A 50-year-old man is said to have crashed into a tree with his fast electric bicycle and then ended up in the canal. The man in his fifties did not survive the blow.
“It was around 6.30 am that passers-by noticed a bicycle on the side of the Kalmthoutsesteenweg in Wuustwezel,” says Patrick De Smedt, spokesperson for the Grens police zone. “Once they stopped, they saw a man lying in the canal. The passers-by immediately called the emergency services, but all help came too late. The victim was already deceased.”
The cyclist, a 50-year-old man from Wuustwezel, rode his speed pedelec towards Achterbroek (Kalmthout). “The Kalmthoutsesteenweg has a bicycle lane and no separate bicycle path. The man crashed into a tree near Kievitstraat on the right of the track. He ended up in the canal next to the road,” says De Smedt.
The police assume it was a one-vehicle accident. “There are currently no indications that other road users were involved in the incident. The circumstances are being further investigated,” the spokesperson said. A traffic expert arrived on site on Monday morning to make observations.
Due to the accident, the Kalmthoutsesteenweg was closed for hours and traffic was diverted. The roadway was reopened around 9:30 am.
