Dutch Fastned opens ‘largest fast charging station to date’ in Belgium

The Dutch Fastned has opened what it claims is the ‘largest fast charging station in Belgium’ on Natiënlaan in Westkapelle, when entering the town of Knokke-Heist. It is one of the first locations in the country with chargers with a capacity of 400 kW. The charging station will also have toilets and a coffee machine.

The new charging station, Fastned’s 28th in Belgium, has twelve charging points with a maximum capacity of 400 kW. Electric drivers can charge their cars with green energy from the sun and wind. Just like Fastned’s other stations, it is recognizable by the yellow roof covered with solar panels. Charging points with a charging capacity of 400 kW are still rare in Belgium for the time being. The powerful fast chargers can add up to a hundred kilometers of range in about three minutes, provided the car supports this speed. In the autumn of 2024, the Westkapelle fast-charging station will be expanded with additional facilities such as a toilet and a coffee machine to, as Fastned puts it, ‘further improve the customer experience during charging’. This is also a Belgian first for Knokke-Heist.

High charging requirement

“We are pleased that we can open this station today, because the Knokke region has a great charging need,” says Tuur De Coninck, country manager Belgium at Fastned. “The twelve additional fast charging places serve both local residents and EV drivers who come to enjoy the Belgian coast. Our drive-through concept and high power levels give more people access to charging infrastructure, avoiding the problems associated with charging on the street or in parking garages. Charging platform Chargemap recently declared Fastned the best charging network in Belgium and we are proud of that.”

Fastned opened its very first fast charging station in Belgium in October 2020, at Ostend airport. The goal is to grow to a thousand locations in Europe by 2030.
