Genk and Club Brugge will face each other for the second time on Sunday. A second match between Wouter Vrancken and Nicky Hayen, ex-teammates at STVV. Their former coach, Jacky Mathijssen, knows them all too well.

Mathijssen knows that they are two very different characters. “Wouter is very close to my character. He managed very well to play everyone, both the opponent and the referee,” he says HBvL.

Mathijssen had to push him to become a trainer. “I urged him many times to take the trainer’s course. Because I knew he would do it one day. (And because I wanted him by my side in the future. But Wouter held off for a long time, he had the feeling what are they going to teach me at school ?”

Hayen was a lot calmer as a player. “Nicky has thrown his weight behind him, he has not shied away from any challenge. He regularly called me when he had to make a decision.”

No matter who you call, they will always speak highly of them

“Whichever ex-club you call, they will always speak highly of him. Because he always goes for the club. He is a team player, that is why we click so well at Club. You can only be successful there in that way. , you have to be able to fit into the organization.”

The two Limburgers prove that you should not always look to a foreign coach. “I’ve said it so many times, we have too much talent to constantly look for trainers elsewhere. Moreover, guys like Hayen and Vrancken don’t exaggerate too much. They are who they are, very humble and respectful.”
