Photographer Anouk Van De Wal opened her new exhibition on Thursday Rose Gardens Are Overrated. Her works of art can be viewed until Sunday, March 24 in the National 55 gallery in Prekersstraat.
You are involved in a trivial bicycle accident that reduces your life by twenty steps a day in a twenty square meter space. That happened to Anouk Van De Wal a few years ago and it was immediately the inspiration for her exhibition. “As I recovered step by step, I started printing objects on paper, using sunlight.”
She used these prints to take photographs that she edited together with images of nature. She then printed it out on Japanese rice paper: a layered process. The works resemble outdated, enlarged postcards and give a nostalgic feeling.
The name of the exhibition is a nod to Dolly Parton’s song I never promised you a rose garden. “My situation was not exactly a ‘rose garden’, but ultimately that is not what makes you richer,” says Anouk.
Anouk started her career in analog photography. She is currently experimenting with both traditional and contemporary techniques. Her exhibition runs from March 22 to 24, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., in the National 55 art gallery at Prekersstraat 55.
