RoyaltyBad news again from the camp of the British royals. Paolo Liuzzo, Princess Beatrice’s ex-boyfriend, has died. Liuzzo was found dead in his hotel room. He was 41.

The news of Liuzzo’s death only now became known, but Princess Beatrice’s ex-boyfriend already died in early February. The man was then found dead in his hotel room in a Miami hotel. It is probably an overdose. News that did not come as a surprise to those around him. Several sources confirm that Liuzzo did indeed have a drug addiction. He also had some serious gambling debts.

Overdose

Michael Vega, an officer with the Miami Police Department, told the British tabloid ‘The Sun’ that they found Liuzzo’s body on February 7 at the citizenM Miami Worldcenter, the hotel where he was staying at the time. The police officer also said that the investigation into the cause of death of Princess Beatrice’s ex-boyfriend is still ongoing. He also confirmed that it may be an overdose.

According to a friend of Liuzzo, things haven’t been going well for him lately. “He liked to party and gamble. He started taking a lot of medications. Later he switched to cocaine and other drugs.” He continues: “He had a bad lifestyle. We were all afraid it would be fatal.” According to the source, Princess Beatrice’s ex-boyfriend also had money problems. “He was always borrowing money to pay off loans. It became a vicious circle.” It is not known how Beatrice reacted to the news. The princess has probably known about Paolo’s death for some time. This is how she would have heard the news after her mother Sarah Ferguson’s diagnosis. At the end of January it was announced that Prince Andrew’s ex-wife was suffering from skin cancer.

Not an irreproachable figure

Beatrice met the American Paolo Liuzzo (then 24) when she was 17 years old. It was the start of a story that would briefly turn the British court upside down. Liuzzo turned out to have a criminal record. For example, in 2002 he had to appear in court for possession of cocaine and manslaughter, after the death of a fellow student during a drunken brawl at the University of Massachusetts. “Beatrice is dating a convict!”, the newspapers headlined. It became such a media storm that Sarah Ferguson – Beatrice’s mother – even had to defend her publicly. Without much result, because the negative reactions kept coming.

And so Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew went one step further: they tried to highlight their support for the couple by inviting Paolo on a skiing holiday to Switzerland in 2006. But their plan blew up in their faces, because because of his criminal record, Paolo was only allowed to travel on business and was not allowed to leave the country. Because he violated those conditions, his community service was extended. After which the story was spread even more widely in British newspapers and magazines. It seriously caused fear in Buckingham Palace, although Paolo himself proved that there was reason for that. Beatrice’s boyfriend embarrassed the royal family by claiming in an interview that he had smoked marijuana in front of Beatrice, her sister Eugenie and their mother, Sarah Ferguson, while they were on holiday together. He later admitted – when his relationship with Beatrice was already over – that he had cheated on the princess several times.

Eventually the situation became untenable. According to British media, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson held a “crisis meeting” with their daughter in May 2006 and urged them to cut all ties. That was never confirmed, although Beatrice effectively ended the relationship some time later. Liuzzo was clearly hurt in his honor: “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue with ‘Bea’,” he responded after the break. “I loved her, but I wasn’t in love with her. I’m not a bad person, but women are my weakness.”
