Just like last year, volunteers from Belgian Red Cross-Flanders are selling plasters. One patch costs 10 euros, although some have paid much more for it. “The price of the patch is 10 euros, no more. This is clearly stated in all our communications: on the patch itself, on the website, on all images. There is no uncertainty about that,” said Belgian Red Cross-Flanders spokesperson Jan Poté. And yet things went wrong for some.

1,950 euros instead of 10 euros

In Leuven, someone accidentally paid 1,950 euros when he purchased a Red Cross plaster at the traffic lights. He paid with a QR code, and only later saw how much money was taken from his account.

The mistake has since been corrected. The man announced via his social media channel that the excess amount had been refunded. “Last year we sold 400,000 patches. That’s about 400,000 actions. If something goes wrong with a few of those actions, it is the result of human error,” says Jan Poté. “Our volunteers sell the plasters with all care and integrity, in good conscience,” it says.

So in this case there is no scam at all. “Our volunteers wear the equipment of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders, and they always stand in typical places such as a department store or an intersection.” Are you in doubt? Then ask if they can identify themselves with an ID.

“WANTED: The buyer of a gold plaster”

The local branch in Tienen is also making a special appeal. They are looking for someone who accidentally paid too much for their patch. The plaster was sold on Sunday at the market in Tienen. An incorrect amount was entered during payment. Neither the buyer nor the seller had seen this. “Because the person in question purchased the patch via a payment terminal, the volunteers do not have access to his bank details. As a result, they are currently unable to issue a refund,” Poté said.

“On Sunday we noticed that someone had paid far too much electronically, namely an amount for which you could probably buy a gold plaster,” said Peter Janssens, chairman of the Tienen Red Cross. He hopes to find the unlucky guy with the playful call.

Exceptional

The spokesperson for Belgian Red Cross-Flanders emphasizes that this mistake is rather an exception. “Only in a very small percentage of all actions that are carried out do things ever go wrong,” says Poté. “In almost all cases, these errors are immediately resolved locally.”

If you were one of those unlucky people who accidentally paid more than 10 euros for a plaster, there are three options. “In other words, our volunteers notice the error themselves and correct it immediately. The person who overpaid can also contact the local department so that they can take the necessary action. If that doesn’t work, you can always email [email protected] with all the information about your purchase,” said the spokesperson. “If you have the slightest doubt, please contact us.”
