Bruckheimer spoke during the interview about his new film, ‘Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’, and about the future of ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. “’Pirates’ is coming back as a reboot. We shouldn’t wait for specific actors like Johnny Depp. With ‘Top Gun’ you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant (Tom Cruise). How many movies he does before he does ‘Top Gun,’ I can’t tell you,” Bruckheimer said in “ComicBook.”
Last year, “The Last of US” creator Craig Mazin collaborated with original screenwriter Ted Elliot on a new story for the reboot. The project stalled due to the Hollywood strikes. Mazin told the ‘LA Times’ that Disney seemed to like their script. “We thought Disney would never be interested because the idea was so strange. We never expected them to buy the script,” Mazin said at the time. “Then the strikes came and now everyone is waiting.”
The series entered rough waters seven years ago, after Johnny Depp – who plays Captain Jack Sparrow in the films – was accused of abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Disney has since cut ties with the actor. According to producer Bruckheimer, Disney has made the choice to continue the series in a different way. “So they opted for a completely new cast.” This also puts an end to the rumor mill that Johnny Depp would return.
