Is brushing your teeth a stupid job? Not if you ever end up in intensive care. In that case it can be life-saving. Scientists from Harvard University (USA) examined a large number of databases with data on the effects of toothbrushing on hospital patients. They zoomed in on patients who were on ventilators, among other things.

Less sick after cleaning

Brushing their teeth every day turned out to reduce their risk of developing pneumonia in hospital by thirty percent. In addition, toothbrushers spent one to two days shorter in the ICU. For other patients, daily brushing reduced the risk of pneumonia by fifteen percent.

The explanation? The bacteria in our mouth can turn into pathogenic bacteria. When they enter the lungs, they can cause pneumonia. This is especially a risk in people with a weakened immune system.
