American pop star Madonna gave a free mega concert on the beach of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday evening. About 1.6 million people showed up, local media report.

Madonna, 65, had announced the event on her website as her “biggest concert ever”. The performance is also the final part of her world tour The Celebration Tour, with which the singer celebrates a career of forty years. She opened the concert at 11 pm local time with Nothing Really Matters. This was followed by hits such as Like a Prayer, Vogue, Hung Up and Like A Virgin.

The organization of the event took a lot of effort for the city council. About three thousand members of the emergency services have been deployed for ‘Operation Madonna’. Local media write that the free concert cost the city about 60 million reals (11 million euros), including the 17 million reals fee for the Queen of Pop.

The city council is confident that the event will generate a multiple of that amount, partly due to the influx of tourists.
