Women everywhere receive less pension, with a European average of 26 percent. The gap is larger in Western and Southern Europe than in Central and Eastern Europe. Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Malta have the largest gap. Slovenia, Denmark and Estonia are the smallest. Belgium is in the European middle bracket. The difference between men and women has decreased everywhere over the past ten years, including in Belgium.

The explanation for the differences can be found in gender inequality in the labor market. Women are more likely than men not to work or to work part-time. Countries can build in redistribution into their policies, including minimum and maximum pensions.

Raised

Pensions Minister Karine Lalieux (PS) is convinced that the federal government’s pension reform will reduce the difference by upgrading part-time work in the calculation of the minimum pension.

“During the past legislature, the minimum pension was increased from 1,291 euros net to 1,640 euros net for a full career,” she says. “It is essential that we continue to strive for fair pension systems that address existing inequalities and provide equal opportunities for men and women.”
