Union SG and RSC Anderlecht kept each other in balance in the first half. Perhaps the most important event of the first 45 minutes was the injury of Red Devil Jan Vertonghen. That could be a real downer for the Purple & White and for the Red Devils.
RSC Anderlecht has already had some injuries this season. A while ago, Dreyer and Hazard, among others, dropped out. It was the end of the season for the latter, while Anders Dreyer has only just returned to fitness.
Brian Riemer was also allowed to welcome Kasper Schmeichel back and so it finally seemed like some better news was on the way for the Purple & White. Until half an hour later an absolute star had to leave.
Captain Jan Vertonghen suffered a groin injury during a sprint just before the half hour. The record international groaned and had to be treated, but then tried to continue playing.
About five minutes later he still had to go to the bench. He could no longer continue and so it was up to Riemer to send a replacement out to pasture. Jan Vertonghen himself looked worried and not at all happy when he made his substitution.
The question remains: how serious will the groin injury prove to be? Will everything be fine again next week, or will the diagnosis be difficult? It may be the end of the season for him and/or even the matches with the Red Devils at the European Championships may be in jeopardy.
