Microsoft blocks some users’ accounts without saying why. While, according to the Digital Services Act, the company must provide a clear explanation when it blocks an account.
Several Dutch users tell RTL News that Microsoft has blocked their accounts. As a result, they lose access to Outlook, OneDrive and other services. Microsoft does not give an exact reason. It only refers them to the code of conduct, which contains a list of rules.
According to the DSA, which has been in force for almost all online platforms since February 17, 2024, a company must provide “clear and specific justification” when blocking an account. Several DSA experts who spoke to RTL News say that Microsoft is breaking the rules. According to them, the company must specifically explain why an account has been blocked.
Microsoft responded briefly to the reports. It neither denies nor confirms that it is violating the rules. “We are working with regulators and other key stakeholders on our approach to digital security and DSA compliance,” the statement told RTL News. A spokesperson for the regulator for the DSA in Ireland, where Microsoft’s European headquarters is located, told RTL News that the regulator is in discussions with the tech giant about the matter.
