The municipality of The Hague wants to realize 2,250 to 2,500 homes, better connections and more greenery in the area around the central station in the coming years. There will also be an additional 130,000 square meters of office space and more than 21,000 m² of social functions. The part of the Prinses Irenepad that currently functions as the forecourt of the temporary House of Representatives will be upgraded to a green square, as part of the Haagse Loper.

On Friday, the city council of The Hague presented the Development Vision for The Hague Central, which presents the future vision for the area around the central station for 2040. The homes, offices and social functions (such as healthcare and education) will be realized in various places in the area, the municipality of The Hague reports.

A large part of this program will be housed in the two planned towers at the Bellevue location. In addition, four residential towers will be built on the site of the Terminal building (not to be confused with the station terminal) at the approach to the Prins Bernhard viaduct and another residential tower will be built along the same viaduct, near Maria Stuartplein, a spokesperson for the municipality said. The Hague to Architectenweb. There are also plans for the development of Bezuidenhoutseweg 50, the location of the Axis House.

The 396 homes within the KJ Den Haag that is under construction are not part of the housing numbers mentioned; Just like those in the already completed high-rise project The Roofs, they are registered as existing housing, says the spokesperson. The Prins Bernhard Viaduct will be partly demolished and reduced to twice one lane. This will create more space for greenery, cyclists and pedestrians, according to the municipal spokesperson.

The Hague Loperplein
The forecourt of the temporary housing of the House of Representatives will be renovated and will become part of the Haagse Loper, a car-free walking route through the city from the Spui, via the Turfmarkt, to Theresiastraat, under the name Haagse Loperplein. Along this walking route, walkers will find all kinds of facilities on the ground floor of the surrounding buildings, reports the municipality of The Hague. The development of the square is possible thanks to the planned renovation of the Royal Library.

Important parts of the development vision are greening and creating better connections between the center and the Rivierenbuurt. This makes the intersection at the Nieuwe Haven simpler and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists. The Ammunition Harbor will also have a much greener ‘front’, with buildings being built towards the Rivierenbuurt instead of towards the Turfmarkt.

In addition, the historic canal along the Oranjebuitensingel and the Boom Sluiterskade/Zwarteweg, between the Ammunition Harbor and Schedeldoekshaven, will become visible again. The vault that is now there will be replaced by two separate bridges.

Greener bus deck at The Hague Central Station
The municipality also wants to make the deck of The Hague Central bus station greener. “This so-called Green Room will be a place to wait in the sun for the train, tram or bus, but also to play or exercise,” reports the municipality of The Hague. The Rijnstraat will also be made greener, as one of the ‘green’ access paths that should make the area more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Hague Central area is part of the plans for the Central Innovation District, with which the municipality wants to double the size of the city center by adding extra homes and other functions, creating more greenery and creating more space for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and shared transport.
