The Pope usually prays it every Sunday at 12 noon Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, followed by a short reflection on Sunday’s Gospel and a commentary on world events. The Pope’s words are broadcast worldwide on radio and TV and widely shared on social media.
During the Easter season, from Easter to Pentecost, the Pope prays it instead of the Angelus Regina Caeli, an ancient hymn by an unknown author on Mary and the resurrection. During Easter, you will also sometimes hear the Regina Caeli in Gregorian tones in our monasteries and abbeys at the end of Compline, the last prayer of the hours.
Text of the Regina Caeli with Dutch translation
FYI: ae is pronounced e and caeli (sometimes also written coeli) is pronounced tsheli.
Regina caeli laetare, alleluia Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia. | Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia Because He whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia Risen is, as he said, alleluia Pray God for us, alleluia. |
Will it be Regina Caeli instead the Angelus prayed, then there come add these rules: | |
Gaude et laetare, Virgo Maria, alleluia. Quia surrexit Dominus vere, alleluia. | Rejoice and be glad, Virgin Mary, alleluia For the Lord is risen indeed, alleluia. |
