NATO says it is “gravely concerned” about recent hostile activity by Russia in NATO member states. Investigations are underway in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

According to NATO, Russian activity in its member states is increasing. This involves “sabotage, acts of violence, cyber and electronic interference, disinformation campaigns and other hybrid operations.” “They pose a threat to our security,” NATO said in a statement.

The organization says it is closely monitoring the situation. It will defend itself and fight Russian operations and attacks, it said.

Intimidate

The alliance condemns Russia’s behavior and says it will not be intimidated. “We call on Russia to fulfill its international obligations, as our members do. Russia’s actions will not deter us from continuing to support Ukraine,” NATO said.

On Friday, Germany accused the Russian military intelligence services GRU of cyber attacks on the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Companies active in logistics, defense, aerospace and computer science were also affected. This involved state institutions and companies that maintain critical infrastructure, such as energy supplies.

Norway said on Thursday it had caught a number of Russian spies who may be preparing to sabotage critical infrastructure. And the Czech Republic noticed attempts to hack its institutions. “Russia has long been trying to undermine the Czech Republic’s democracy and security,” said Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský.

Between August 2023 and early April, 46,000 aircraft – including from Ryanair and easyJet – also reported navigation problems near the Baltic Sea. Everyone suspects the hand of the Russians.
