According to the rumor mill, he was terminally ill, but Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov says he is as fit as a fiddle. This should be evident from the striking images of a visit to the gym.
The independent Novaya Gazeta Europe published a report on Monday showing that pancreatic necrosis had been diagnosed in 47-year-old Kadyrov in 2019. In this serious disease, the tissue in the pancreas dies. According to Novaya Gazeta Kadyrov’s condition had also recently worsened, and the Kremlin was therefore looking for a successor for the man who could guarantee stability in the historically explosive region.
But a few hours after the message from Novaya Gazeta Kadyrov published a video on his own social media channels showing him lifting weights in a fitness room and wrestling with a sparring partner. “A busy day ended with some exercise and positivity,” Kadyrov wrote in the accompanying text. “Remember that taking care of your health is an investment in your future,” he continued, without referring to the rumors about his illness.
Rumors about Kadyrov’s serious health problems have been circulating for some time. The Chechen dictator has been seen in public several times in recent months with a swollen face and has repeatedly lost his words during speeches. In September, the man was even said to have been kept in an artificial coma after an overdose of tranquilizers.
